» The United States of America:

The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) published in 1989, in the United States, a program for a ban and phase out on asbestos and asbestos-containing products so that by 1997, these products could only be used by the military and the air and space industries. In 1991, this regulation was overturned by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans.


» Italy, France and Germany:

Italy and France have banned the use of asbestos and asbestos-containing products in 1992. Germany, in 1995.


» Nordic countries:

Tolerance limits in the workplace vary between 0.5 and 2 fibers/cm3, but the use of any asbestos-containing product requires a governmental license.


» Switzerland:

Only fiber-cement products are allowed.


» Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Finland and Austria:

In these countries, the legislation is based on the ILO Convention 162. However, these countries have a very effective inspection program.


» Japan:

The previous tolerance limit, of 2 fibers/cm3, was lowered to half that value as of 1992. The use of asbestos is currently banned in that country.
