Background

The beginning

The Instituto Brasileiro do Crisotila was created as a result of joint efforts by the government, entrepreneurs and asbestos workers, moved by their awareness of the important role that chrysotile asbestos plays in the economy and in the life of many communities.

It all began in the year 2000, when several entrepreneurs and workers in the State Goiás proposed the creation of a national institution to:

  • defend the controlled use of  chrysotile asbestos;
  • preserve the use of the natural deposits of chrysotile asbestos;
  • guarantee a healthy and safe environment for workers;
  • ensure environmental protection;
  • disseminate asbestos-related news to our communities to keep them well-informed.

The project

The project was presented to The Asbestos Institute, a Canadian agency known worldwide for its actions aimed at defending the use of chrysotile asbestos. This institution promptly lent technical and scientific support which resulted in the creation of the Instituto Brasileiro do Crisotila After several consultations with many Brazilian institutions, agencies and unions which are in any way connected with asbestos, the Instituto Brasileiro do Crisotila – or Crisotila Brasil - was created on October 15, 2002, by 18 founding members and entrepreneurs involved in the mining industry, in the fiber cement sector and in other sectors that use this mineral. This foundation also received the invaluable support of the Agência Goiana de Desenvolvimento Industrial e Mineral, which is currently represented by the Superintendência de Geologia e Mineração of the Department of Industry and Trade of the State of Goiás.

Recognition

In May of 2003, Crisotila Brazil was classified by the Secretaria Nacional de Justiça as an Organização da Sociedade Civil de Interesse Público (Public Interest Civil Society Organization) - OSCIP, and earned the right to negotiate cooperation agreements and partnerships with governmental agencies.

Crisotila Brasil represents a concrete initiative on the part of the communities to become organized in order to face the challenges posed by the use of natural resources in a responsible, conscientious and sustainable manner. The Institute is fully structured to provide a variety of services: technical and administrative support, and human resource management. The Institute is also capable of helping in the development of strategic communication projects.
